Thermal Cracking – Yama Ware

Large temperature variations are part of the nature of wood kilns. Often there will be dramatic temperature differences from one side of a piece to another. Sometimes this will cause cracks to form in the piece during the firing. These cracks canĀ fill with ash and sometimes even heal over. Other times it will appear like a piece was torn apart during the firing. Quite often this ruins the pot. However, when these thermal cracks add interest to a piece they are to be celebrated.
